Captain Ned Morehouse commanded the 163rd Signal Photo Company (SPC) from date of activation (Sept. 42) until he was relieved of command in Italy and transferred to the 3131st Signal Service Company in Algiers, Algeria, where he then assumed assumed command with the mission of preparing that unit to move to Italy and relieve the 163rd Signal Photo Company which was to participate in the invasion of Southern France.
The 3131st Signal Service Company was not appropriately organized or equipped on paper. Morehouse sought to re-organize it strictly to perform its combat mission with a field army for combat operations in a theater such as the Italian theater.
The 3131st was deactivated and the new 196th Signal Photo Company was activated under a new Table of Organization and Equipment. (MTOE)
After Victory in Europe, May 6, 1945, 196th Signal Photo Company Personnel eligible for discharge were separated from the unit, some replacements were received, and the unit transported to the United States for 30 days R&R. Morehouse left on leave and upon his return to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, he learned that half of his unit had been separated, and in the years that followed did not see them again
.
Personnel assigned to the 196th Signal Photo Company were compiled into an informal unit roster in 1945. The co-author(s) are grateful to Donald Wiedenmayer for providing this listing and other unit history materials.
Unit personnel are identified by first and last name and hometown of record where known. Any mistakes in the finished product are entirely unintentional. Asterisks * indicate those men who gave their lives in action.
